qBittorrent
The best free torrent client with no ads: built-in RSS reader for downloads, horizontal + vertical mode, sequential download, IP filter lists, multi-network-interface binding and a web UI for remote management. v5.x removed Python-based search engine support — use jackett/prowlarr for search instead.

What it does
qBittorrent downloads and seeds torrents, with search, RSS-driven downloads, bandwidth scheduling and a web interface for remote control.
When it helps
When you need a torrent client that behaves like software rather than an advertising platform. It is also commonly used for legal distribution — Linux ISOs, open datasets, archival media — where a clean client matters.
Limitations
The interface is plain, and like any torrent client it will happily saturate your uplink unless you set limits. The built-in search needs plugins configured separately.
Security and licensing
Open source (GPL). Two practical notes: keep the client updated, and remember that whatever you download is whatever the swarm gives you — verify checksums for official distributions, and never run unknown executables from anonymous sources.
Alternatives
Transmission for a lighter client (popular on Linux and NAS devices); Deluge for plugin-driven customisation; BiglyBT as a feature-heavy fork of the old Vuze codebase.
Common questions
qBittorrent vs Transmission vs Deluge — which torrent client?
qBittorrent for a full-featured GUI with built-in search and a web UI, zero ads. Transmission for a minimal footprint on Linux and NAS boxes. Deluge for plugin-driven customisation. All three are open source; avoid anything with bundled adware.
How do I set up qBittorrent safely?
Download only from qbittorrent.org. In Tools → Options: set a download limit so your uplink is not saturated, enable encryption (Tools → Options → Connection → Encryption mode: Prefer encryption), and bind to a VPN network interface if you use one. Keep the client updated.
How do I bind qBittorrent to a VPN?
Tools → Options → Advanced → Network interface — pick your VPN's interface (e.g. tun0, WireGuard, or the ExpressVPN/Nord adapter). qBittorrent then refuses to traffic any peer connection outside that interface. If the VPN drops, the torrent stops — exactly what you want.
Is qBittorrent safe? Does it have malware?
The official builds from qbittorrent.org are clean, open source (GPL), and contain no adware. Danger comes from third-party "modded" installers and, more importantly, from what you download: verify checksums for Linux ISOs and official releases, and never run unknown executables from anonymous sources.
Why is qBittorrent stalled or not downloading?
Usual suspects: no seeders on the torrent, an upload limit set too low (seeding ratio affects the swarm's willingness to give you data), a saturated uplink, or an ISP throttling BT traffic. In Options → Speed, uncap download, set upload to ~80% of your real uplink, and enable protocol encryption. A VPN can also bypass ISP throttling.
